From farm to plate

It doesn’t come fresher than this. Our Nomad farm provides the kitchen of Nomad Beach Bar and Restaurant with fresh and organic fruits and vegetables, while we source other key ingredients, including our fresh seafood from local, sustainable suppliers.

For our Chef Andrea, it is an amazing opportunity to work with fresh produce: « Fresh produce is easy to cook, and its great for creativity, as I seek inspiration for the special dish of the day with what I receive from the farm. The result is a delicious meal, and a great way to support our local producers – our fruits and vegetables come from our Nomad farm, and the fish comes from our local fishermen! ».

Among our sustainable dishes not to be missed, you can taste our well known detox tuna fillet with crunchy ginger, multi-coloured vegetables and a sweet sesame dressing, or our home-made tortelloni with organic green beans and dill sauce.

Coastal flavours are also an integral part of our menu. Among the locally inspired dishes, there is the Chicken Korma served with spicy masala chips and the Spicy Prawn Curry.

If these dishes have made your mouth water, come and taste them at Nomad Beach Bar and Restaurant!

Giveaways of our sustainable ‘treasures’

At Sands at Nomad, we have been increasingly aware of sustainable practices. Among our green approaches, we have developed a farm, using permaculture principles, we help protect the local environment and wildlife, and we strive to recycle and upcycle plastic waste.

As part of our recycling practices, over the past year we have collected chipped but perfectly usable crockery such as plates, bowls, saucers, platters… Earlier this week, we have decided to give them away to the Kebene Children’s home in Diani, a shelter caring for street children and orphans. Together with the crockery, we gave them some passion fruits from our private harvest.

The second giveaway of the week was our home made, foot-operated hand wash unit, given to the Colobus Conservation, a non profit organization protecting primates such as the Colobus monkeys.

Finally, we have also donated 720,000 bonga points to Together with Diani, a mutlicultural volunteer group supporting the most vulnerable households at Diani Beach. Bonga points is a loyalty scheme for all Safaricom PrePay and PostPay subscribers. Our donation allowed the group to buy 4,500 kg of maize flour, which have been distributed to the most needy.

In a world were disposable has unfortunately become normality, here at Sands at Nomad we do our best to recycle and give objects a second life! And we are happy to sometimes share our sustainable ‘treasures’!

Is this the best beach in the world?

Not only is Diani Beach one of Africa’s best beaches, but we would even go one step further and claim it’s one of the top beach destinations in the world! Voted as one of the top beaches in Africa by CNN, Diani Beach offers an expansive 20km of powder white sand which meets the Indian Ocean on Kenya’s south coastline.

It’s not just the breathtaking location and scenery of Diani Beach that impress, an extensive range of experiences are on offer, for both adults and families to enjoy:

1. Boutique accommodation
The Sands at Nomad boutique hotel offers an individualistic selection of 9 comfortable room types, including exclusive beach cottages and luxurious suites, many with private jacuzzies, panoramic terraces and spacious sitting rooms.
All the rooms are individually interior designed and furnished with an inspired combination of Swahili objects d’art furniture and the finest mahogany woodwork.

2. Fine food and drink options
Nomad Beach Bar & Restaurant is located at the ‘best spot on the beach’ and offers an extensive menu of fresh, organic and healthy home made dishes together with the best wine collection on the south coast. The resident sommelier is available to help pair wine with your choice of cuisine, whether it be fresh seafood, prime cuts of locally sourced meat, organic vegetarian dishes straight from the Nomad farm, fresh home made pasta and sushi, as well as the metre long pizzas straight from the wood fired oven. The owner’s wine cellar offers a fine dining experience in a relaxed and intimate setting for those looking for a more private dining experience.

This is also the perfect place to simply sit with your favourite cocktail or beer, and watch the world go by.

3. Family friendly
Families will love the long and wide stretch of beach, perfect for frolicking in the sand with the younger travellers. The coral reef that runs parrallel to Diani Beach acts as a wave breaker, meaning the shallow protected ocean is perfect for more fun and adventure. Trips to the sandbank for snorkelling and exploration are a must-do for all families visiting Diani Beach.

4. Underwater wonders
Scuba dive or snorkel some of the country’s top dive sites and explore the pristine coral reefs along Diani Beach coast.

This area is home to a unique community of sea turtles, that divers can swim with all year round, and the ocean’s largest fish, the majestic whaleshark, migrates through these waters from November to February.

Learning to dive with Diving the Crab, Kenya’s leading scuba diving centre, is another bucketlist worthy experience.

5. Kitesurfing
For adventurer seekers, Diani Beach is one of the best spots for kitesurfing in Africa, and is host to the annual Kenya Kite Cup which is hosted by Nomad Beach Bar & Restaurant every year in January.

We might be a little biased in our opinion, but we do believe that Diani Beach is a prime contender to be ranked as the best beach in the world!

Sands at Nomad- The perfect family destination

With different ages and attention spans to cater for, competing interests and the seemingly elusive pursuit of some peace and relaxation for Mum and Dad, finding a holiday destination to suit the whole family can be a challenge.

That’s why The Sands at Nomad is the perfect place for your next family holiday.

Nomad’s sublime beach frontage is hard to beat and will captivate even hard-to-impress teens. Unlike many beach locations, it’s permanently chilled, never too crowded and always Instagramable.
Little ones will bask in the timeless childhood idylls of building sandcastles, splashing at the water’s edge, hunting for crabs and starfish and burning off excess toddler energy with a run around at low tide. They can even create their own masterpieces in the sand with help from a local sand artist. There’s also regular entertainment from a talented group of acrobats who enthral our lunchtime diners with their impressive skills – you may find your young ones dangling in the air if they’ve decided to join in!

The whole family can enjoy a leisurely camel ride along Diani Beach and a fun-filled game of beach volleyball. Dolphin spotting and deep-sea fishing excursions can be arranged while the Nomad watersports center offers something for everyone with a variety of ocean-bound pursuits. Kayak to a stunning sand island, explore Kenya’s mesmerising marine life with a snorkelling session, try out windsurfing or stand-up paddleboarding and embrace the thrill of chasing the waves with our surfing and boogie boards.

If you’re keen to explore the depths of our beautiful ocean, head over to Diving the Crab, Kenya’s premier diving school based at Nomad. Diving the Crab offers an extensive range of PADI scuba diving courses for both beginner and experienced divers as well as exciting kids’ courses. Not sure if breathing underwater is for you? Sign-up for a free scuba diving trial in the Nomad pool, led by Diving the Crab’s expert instructors.

If you can peel yourself away from the beach and endless water-based activities, take a tour of the neighbouring Marine Education Center. With interactive displays, an onsite marine biologist and a host of hands-on activities to occupy the kids, it’s a great way to learn more about the world’s oceans, the perils facing our marine life and to pick up a few conservation and recycling tips.
Nomad is home to a dedicated sea turtle hatchery as part of a community-driven effort to protect endangered sea animals, so there’s a chance to witness tiny hatchlings as they embark on a frenzied dash for the sea.

If the kids don’t get the memo that you’d like a lie-in, why not make the most of an early morning guided forest walk? Nomad sits within 26 acres of lush coastal forest which is a haven for bird, insect and primate life. One of Diani’s most famous residents, the striking, black and white Colobus monkey, can often be found relaxing in the trees.

With all this activity, you’ll need to stop and replenish at one of our first-class restaurants. The Nomad Beach Bar and Restaurant offers a mouth-watering selection of international cuisine from an a la carte menu and has a dedicated children’s menu; not forgetting the tantalising ice-cream parlour, which is the ultimate holiday pit-stop for guests of all ages. The Riva’s Pool Bar and Restaurant offers delicious lunches and afternoon snacks without having to pack up the kids and leave the pool area.

Riva’s Bar hosts a Friday night snake show with a professional snake handler, allowing you to mingle at our manager’s cocktail evening while the rest of the family acquaint themselves with the reptilian world. Even a romantic dinner for two is possible. Guests can avail of our baby-sitting service for a child-free evening.

If there’s one image to leave you with, it’s this: you, reclining on a sunbed, sipping an ice-cold beverage and catching the cool sea breeze as the kids play on sandy white shores.

Combine your dream Safari with a relaxing stay on Kenya’s Diani Beach

‘I never knew a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy.’
– Ernest Hemingway

Africa’s captivating beauty is showcased to arresting effect on Kenya’s white-fringed beaches and awe-inspiring national parks. And you don’t have to choose one over the other. What could be better than combining a thrilling safari with a relaxing tropical beach holiday?

Safaris, which derives from the Swahili word for ‘journey’, were born in Kenya which boasts several magnificent game reserves. Africa’s majestic ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo – roam freely across great swaths of savannah along with wildebeest, zebra and giraffe.

Whether you choose to ride with the Maasai in Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara, track elephants in the haunting shadow of a snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli or traverse the plains of the mighty Tsavo, a safari in Kenya will take you to the heart of Africa’s wilderness and to the home of its iconic wildlife.

Stay in a luxury lodge, dine under the stars and share stories as flames flicker around a campfire for a truly memorable safari experience. A bush breakfast might even be on the cards.
When it’s time to leave the wilderness behind, why not unwind with a laidback holiday at The Sands before heading home?
With its prime beachfront location, The Sands offers you the ultimate getaway to round off a fabulous safari.

Take a leisurely stroll along powdery soft sand, recline in the shade on private sunbeds, cool off in our galena stone pool and indulge in a therapeutic massage treatment in our soothing forest spa. There’s also a chance to dine in the owner’s stylish wine cellar. Our pick of bucket-list activities includes kayaking to a sand island, stand-up paddle boarding, camel riding, dolphin spotting and scuba diving.

Kenya is a dream destination for wildlife lovers and anyone craving some rest and relaxation in a tropical paradise. We invite you to combine the two for the holiday of a lifetime.
